Don Giovanni’s Ende.

“Don Giovanni” Opera by W.A. Mozart

Direction: Adriana Hernandez Flores

Live stage – Final Act

MDW Probe Bhuene – 2019

This production offers a contemporary interpretation of Mozart’s “Don Giovanni,” drawing parallels between the opera’s themes of power, desire, and moral ambiguity with the modern-day Mexican drug cartel culture. Through vibrant characters like Don Giovanni, Donna Anna, and the Commendatore, the opera delves into the dynamics of violence, corruption, and societal power structures. As the story unfolds, it explores the seductive allure of wealth and the consequences of unchecked ambition, all set against the backdrop of a society grappling with issues of justice, morality, and the pursuit of pleasure. Amidst this turmoil, the opera incorporates elements of Mexican culture, including the vibrant celebration of the Day of the Dead, adding a layer of spiritual depth to the narrative as the souls of the deceased haunt the characters, serving as a reminder of the inevitability of mortality and the consequences of their actions.

In the opera “Don Giovanni” we can look at the constellation of relationships and imagine the different dramatic moments as in the current Mexican society, in which violence, brutal hatred and the right of the strongest, but also passion, joy, metaphysical religious convictions, with their very lively cult of the death and the idea of romanticism, love prevails. In this society, we find images and moments that fit perfectly with Mozart’s opera. At the same time, Adriana simplifies and represents the scene with cardboard boxes of different sizes that could well symbolize the transport of drugs, poverty and the fragility of each situation.
